A deep Atlantic field of unusual seabed mounds about 160 kilometres northwest of Cape Wrath. Many mounds are capped by cold-water coral thickets that create rare biogenic reef habitat in otherwise muddy deep water.
Darwin Mounds
Why it is protected
Maintain or restore the Annex I reef feature to favourable condition.
Protect the extent, structure and function of cold-water coral habitat.
Habitats and significant life
Habitats: Cold-water coral reef, Deep-sea mound, Mud and sand seabed, Rockall Trough.
Significant species: Desmophyllum pertusum cold-water coral, Sponges, Xenophyophores, Deep-sea fish.
Rules and activities
Bottom trawling has been prohibited over the protected coral area through fisheries measures.
Other operations remain subject to environmental assessment and applicable licensing.
Governance
Joint Nature Conservation Committee; UK Government; Scottish and UK fisheries authorities.
Pressures
Bottom-contact fishing; Subsea infrastructure; Climate and ocean-chemistry change.
Protection effectiveness
These dimensions are intentionally separate: a valid designation or active management program does not, by itself, prove ecological recovery.
Habitats and marine life connections
Ecologically related protected areas
These places share documented habitat types or the same ocean region. The relationship is ecological context, not proof of direct connectivity.
Condition and evidence
MLL reports what the available evidence supports. It does not infer ecological health from designation or mapped coverage.
Insufficient evidence
Place-specific ecology and management evidence has been reviewed, but the available indicators do not support a single current ecological trend for the whole protected area.

How to read this: Insufficient evidence means the available evidence cannot support a conclusion. It does not mean the MPA is in poor condition.
Reef condition is assessed through feature-specific conservation advice. Confidence: moderate. Protection of the reef feature is documented; no whole-ecosystem score is assigned.
Bottom-contact fishing controls and reef conservation objectives are documented. Confidence: high. This is evidence of management implementation, not a direct measure of coral recovery.
